Course Overview
The Nursing (Intellectual Disability) programme at the University of Limerick prepares students to provide specialist nursing care for individuals with intellectual disabilities across all stages of life. Students study human development, nursing science, psychology, communication, health promotion, behavioural support, and person-centred care while completing extensive clinical placements in community and healthcare settings.
The programme emphasizes inclusion, advocacy, ethical practice, and interdisciplinary collaboration to promote independence and improve quality of life. Students develop strong clinical, interpersonal, and decision-making skills through evidence-based learning and supervised practice. Graduates are prepared for rewarding careers in disability services, community healthcare, residential care, specialist support services, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
Entry Requirements
- Completion of 10 + 2 with a minimum aggregate of 70% including Biology or General Science subjects.
- IELTS 7.0 (with no band less than 6.5), TOEFL iBT 95, or PTE 65.
- Interpersonal suitability interview, Garda Vetting, and medical health screening.
- High school academic transcripts, statement of purpose, health disclosure form, and character references.
- Clinical environment orientation and police clearance validation.
